The cute little strip of shops down by Laverton station just got a bit cooler with the recent launch of Pizza Cult. New owners, husband and wife team Daniel and Neha, have breathed life into the old Red Gum Pizza premises with a fresh new brand, refurbished interior and a new secret weapon that every local Westie needs to know about…..!
The playful new interior of Pizza Cult is open and spacious, with the pizza oven stripped back to create a feature and a line of gleaming beer taps welcoming you in. The refurbishment features a crisp modern interior, with a neutral black, grey and white colour palette and sleek lines. It a huge improvement the old Red Gum Pizza café, which struggled with a poor layout and dated styling. In stark contrast, Pizza Cult is a cool, welcoming and comfortable family diner – somewhere to enjoy a meal and a drink with friends, and not just grab a pizza to take-away.
The master stroke (and secret weapon), is the new courtyard garden. Not only have Daniel and Neha created a great space for family dining, evening drinks, parties and functions, they have delivered what Point Cook is really lacking – somewhere nice to sit outside and enjoy a few beers. Here you will find Coldstream apple cider, Doss Blocks pale lager and Big Wave golden ale alongside a local house beer for a reasonable $7 a schooner or $4.50 pot, and a nice choice of wines.
Daniel’s vision for Pizza Cult was to create pizzas using only fresh ingredients, prepared on the premises – you won’t find pre-packaged or canned toppings here, and all the meats are sliced and diced on-site. If you have specific dietary requirements, then you’ll be pleased to know that Pizza Cult is very accommodating and has and gluten-free pizzas available, with Daniel hoping to get certified by the Coeliac Association in the near future. Vegetarians are also well catered for and an appropriate vegan cheese is being trialled and will be available soon.
We dined on a balmy weekend evening and sat in the new courtyard, which we would highly recommend you make the most of while the Melbourne sunshine lasts! Pizza Cult will have heaters installed for winter, but in the meantime, soak up what’s left of the evening rays with an ice-cold draught craft beer or crisp white wine and take a gander at the new menu.
Pizza Cult has a fun menu, with each pizza named after the same line up of celebrities adorning the walls – it’s great to see Karl Stefanovic up there with Donald Trump, the Queen of England and Marilyn Monroe (read into that what you will!) and pizzas start at a very competitive $9. Our first choice was the Bob Marley; prosciutto, fresh rocket and shaved parmesan, signature CULT tomato and mozzarella on a gluten-free base. I opt for gluten-free pizza bases wherever possible, often with disappointing results, but not so here – Pizza Cult managed to deliver to the same light, fluffy base with crisp edges as I would expect from a regular base.
I’m pretty sure the Pamela Anderson was ordered more for the name than the toppings, but again – a fab pizza! Light, crispy edges and just the right amount of squidge with a generous amount of succulent chicken pieces and a tangy BBQ sauce. If you can’t eat a whole pizza, don’t worry, you can take it home with you and let’s be honest- who doesn’t love cold pizza for lunch, right?!
The kids shared the Hawaiian Pizza ($10 – great value), chicken nuggets and some awesome chips (both $7) and rounded out their meals with some terrific shakes – both were happy campers and polished off much more food than usual.
If pizzas are not your thing, Pizza Cult has plenty of other options on the menu including pastas, some mighty fine-looking burgers and a Parma. Whilst most meals are available to take-away, Eat West think you really ought to give the new café and courtyard garden a go!
Pizza Cult is a great local option for a family night out and Eat West definitely recommend giving it a try. The food is well priced and excellent quality, the service is super fast and friendly – oh, and did I mention the wine… 😉 ? You really can’t beat a good wood fired pizza, and with 44 years of experience, pizza chef Vince has it down – it’s all about that crispy crust, and light doughy middle!!
